The annual Gavilan Kennel Club dog show at Bolado Park will return April 
30, but with a slightly different feel than past years - as its members 
are trying to rid themselves of all associations with Hollister 
businesses due to the city's mandate for two dog types to get spayed or 
neutered.
 
In response to the new Hollister spay and neuter ordinance approved in 
October of last year, the dog show organizers are telling owners to 
avoid spending money in Hollister - and move their business to 
neighboring Tres Pinos, San Juan Bautista or Santa Clara County.

National animal group files lawsuit about Palm Springs Animal Shelter

A lawsuit filed today by an animal rights group accuses the Palm Springs Animal Shelter of euthanizing animals too quickly and of lax recordkeeping.

 The suit filed at the Larson Justice Center by the Animal Legal Defense Fund names four Riverside County residents who volunteered at the shelter as plaintiffs.

The complaint alleges that the shelter violated the Palm Springs municipal code by euthanizing animals before the required five-day holding period.

"There is a holding period required by law that says animals must be held for a certain amount of time so that somebody can come in and find them and adopt them," said Michelle Lee, an attorney with the Animal Legal Defense Fund. ``These animals are not given that chance.''

A city representative did not immediately return a message seeking comment on the suit.

But Palm Springs City Councilwoman Ginny Foat, a member of the Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, called the allegations in the lawsuit ``ludicrous.''

``We never, ever euthanize adoptable animals,'' she said.

She said the shelter only euthanizes animals that are vicious or very ill, deeming them ``unadoptable.''

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- An Animal Control commissioner was found to be 
keeping more than 384 cats in her home. But not for much longer, she's 
applying to move more than 350 animals into county jurisdiction, despite 
having breaking the rules already.

Animal Control Commissioner Dawn Watchus has heard complaints of animal 
hoarders in the past. Now the question is: Is she an animal hoarder herself?

Watchus has had up to 384 cats in her home in Ridgecrest. For the past 
18 years, Watchus has been operating D&S Loving Animal Rescue in the 
city of Ridgecrest, where she has been violating the the city's 
allowance of having eight animals in a household. Now she's asking to 
move into the county jurisdiction. But the county is saying, "Not so 
fast."....

It appeared the animals had been cared for. "There was a lot of affection and love displayed" by the owner, Glavan said.

 

So far, most appear to be in reasonably good health, with no signs of abuse or neglect; still, it will be a few days before the assessment is complete, officials said.

San Francisco animal abuser database

"I want to create a database that involves names of the people that have been convicted of animal abuse, and also of the people who have not been convicted because there was not enough evidence to prosecute them, along with people who have neglected animals in the past," said Bernal.

The information would be solely used by San Francisco rescue groups, non-profits and city shelters, with an eye toward going statewide in the future.
